Peninsula Symphony Association: Specific Purpose Donations

The Peninsula Symphony Association is a tax-exempt non-profit organization that sponsors programs for the benefit of young people. We have "Mozart in the Classroom", "Los Angeles Harbor College Youth Orchestra" and the "Knox Concerto Competition." Your donations are tax deductible, subject to constraints of the tax code. You can specify donations be allocated to the Youth Orchestra or the Knox Competition. These funds will not be used for operating expenses or other purposes. The Youth Symphony categories are configured for a specific amount but you are free to specify your contribution for the "Knox" activities. For your convenience, we offer PayPal for secure processing of credit cards over the internet.

Los Angeles Harbor College/Peninsula Symphony Association Youth Orchestra

This program operates as a class in the Los Angeles Harbor College Extension School. Students K-12 who play a musical instrument are eligible to participate. As an extension class, it is subject to requirements of the Los Angeles Community College District. The registration fee is $69 for each student for one semester. The PSA is attempting to establish a fund to cover the fees for the program.

Edith Knox Young Person's Concerto Performance Showcase

The Knox Competition is an opportunity for young soloists to perform in a theater with an orchestra. Every year we have been able to present six (sometimes more) finalists. Many of the winners have gone on to careers in academia or careers as professional soloist. The annual cost of the program has grown to nearly $10,000. Your contributions directed to this program will help these young soloists.

Knox Competition: General Fund

The donations will be used for Knox Competition expenses. This can include such items as theater rental, insurance, piano tuning, judge fees, prizes, or other expenses incurred while producing the competition. These donations will not be used to operate the Peninsula Symphony Association.

Knox Competition: Judge Fee ($300)

To maintain the quality of the Knox Competition we invite judges of known reputation. They work a 10 hour day at the preliminary competition and 6 hours at the final. The current compensation is $300.00 a day for each judge. In total we spend $1,800 for judges.

Knox Competition: Piano Tuning ($750)

As anybody who owns a piano knows, they fall out of tune over time. The Knox Competition uses two pianos, both of which need to be in tune for both the preliminary and final competition. We spend $750 for tuning at each stage.

Knox Competition: Theater Rental ($1500)

Between renting the theater and insurance, the venue is a $1,500 expense.
